The organizers of the Cannabis Advancement Series (CAS) met at UMass Dartmouth for an inspired Saturday of panels and community discussion looking at inclusion and innovation in cannabis entrepreneurship at the end of October.
The event featured great speeches and thought leadership from the CAS members, local cannabis operators like Americann CEO Tim Keough, and other panelists and representatives from local cannabis businesses that have built inclusion and innovation into their business and personal framework, aimed at making the local industry a more diverse and progressive space for cannabis entrepreneurship.
Keynote speaker Chairman Steve Hoffman from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, who spoke not only to the Commonwealth’s commitment to social equity, veteran entrepreneurship, and social justice, as is a common refrain these days pointed out the paramount need for capital investment in order for cannabis operators to get off the ground.
When the conversation eventually involved matters surrounding cannabis investment or private capital placement in rising or mid-stage cannabis operators, Cannapreneur Partners CEO and founder Michael Scott lead a breakout thought leadership session and Q+A with the attendees in the room.
During his address, Scott pointed out common mistakes early stage cannabis entrepreneurs and operators make when approaching investors for start-up or growth capital, the importance of tenacity when making it over the early hurdles on the road to success, and why getting a cannabis start-up off the ground is not only a marathon, but it’s a marathon race “running uphill, there’s ice, and a good portion of the population will judge you for even entering the race”.
Scott also discussed his background in raising capital for cannabis entrepreneurs, how the right teams, strategy, track records of success, and drive to succeed are great, but without crucial capital investment most start-ups won’t make it past their own pitch deck before seeing their projects experience the tremendous growth and explosive returns possible in the current legal landscape for cannabis entrepreneurship.
