Big alcohol should be worried from the encroaching rise of cannabis infused beverages.
Not only have beer sales hit a wall in states with legalized cannabis, with industry analysts citing the surge of legal cannabis products being at the center of the lag in sales, but overall the rise of new options for products in line with consumers seeking sober options while socializing has led to a spike in the market seeing new opportunities in the emerging cannabis infused beverages space. With global cannabis sales already having grown 48% to $15 billion as per a recent report from The ArcView Group, this is a key time to look at the opportunities in the cannabis infused beverages space.
From Grand View’s report [emphasis ours]:
“The global cannabis beverages market size was valued at USD $901.8 million in 2018 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 17.8% from 2019 to 2025. Rising demand for wellness drinks is anticipated to drive the growth. Moreover, low sugar content of the product and presence of appropriate quantity of cannabis for consumption are the factors projected to fuel the product demand. Legalization of marijuana usage for medical and recreational purposes in many countries is expected to drive the production as well as demand for cannabis-infused beverages.”
Industry insight publication MG Retailer picked up on the report and broke down some of the findings:
“Grand View reported CBD drinks experienced faster growth than THC drinks in 2018. The timing for CBD beverages may be ideal as the mocktail craze already shows an emerging demand for non-intoxicating drinks. Grand View concludes CBD drinks are popular because of the cannabinoid’s wellness and anti-inflammatory potential. This could be a major component of CBD’s continued growth in popularity.
THC-based drinks and cocktails also are rising in popularity. Unlike the therapeutic benefits associated with CBD drinks, THC beverages are popular with adults seeking recreational experiences. Grand View believes the demand for THC drinks is mostly driven by those who already consume both cannabis and alcohol.”
All of this is in line with what we saw when Cannapreneur Partners attended last year’s Cannabis Drinks Expo in California, which was bursting with exceptionally packaged, high end non-alcoholic and alcoholic CBD and THC cannabis infused beverages on display from brands all around the country.
